Guided tours of the exhibition "Artemisia Gentileschi, Heroine of Art", at the Jacquemart-André Museum

Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1653), the celebrated Italian Renaissance painter, is being honored at the Musée Jacquemart-André with a stunning retrospective showcasing some thirty of her paintings, alongside works by her father, Orazio Gentileschi, and by the master who inspired their use of chiaroscuro: Caravaggio.

Presented in a concise layout across eight rooms, the exhibition traces Artemisia's artistic development, from her early training in the family workshop to her first commissions, including her travels to Florence (where she worked for the Grand Duke of Tuscany and befriended the scholar Galileo, among others), Naples, and Venice. Her rape by the painter Agostino Tassi is, of course, alluded to in numerous paintings of strong, heroic women, such as Judith, Cleopatra, Magdalene, and Minerva/Athena—all paragons of the artist, and also fashionable subjects during the Baroque era.
