About the event
Appearing in the 1960s in Philadelphia as a means of expression in public spaces, street art quickly developed in New York before leaving the American borders to be exported elsewhere in the world, thanks to artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) and Keith Haring (1960-1990).
In France in particular, the street artist wave took over Paris, which found itself decorated on all sides from the 1990s: in its subways, its streets, its buildings, its roofs, around figures such as Jérôme Mesnager or Jef Aérosol, Miss Tic, and so many others, each with their own recognizable techniques (stencil, letters, mosaics, mirrors, etc.).
By nature ephemeral, illegal and clandestine, the 1980s and 1990s were marked by the innovation of this street art that was now displayed in broad daylight. To understand this era and also how street art gained its letters of nobility, we will return to the origin of this art, its vocabulary, and of course, to the turning point of the 1990s, in France as elsewhere, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the city's media library network.
