About the event
Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923), a visionary and brilliant builder, is inextricably linked with the history of France from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century. Gustave Eiffel entered immortality with his famous tower, although destiny intended it to be temporary. He is one of the few engineers whose name immediately symbolizes his creation, alongside Charles Garnier and his Paris Opera. However, far from limiting himself to this one construction, Eiffel was also the author of numerous other works: viaducts (Porto, Garabit), observatories (Nice), museums (Palais Galliera), or stations (Pest) to name but a few.
But how did this entrepreneur, who had an unshakeable faith in scientific progress and technology, manage to turn the history of engineering on its head, developing solid constructions that could be reproduced in a short space of time, and were sought after the world over? And what were the recipes for success?
These are just some of the questions we'll try to answer in this lecture, which will look back at the life and work of the man nicknamed the “Iron Magician”.
