About the event

Created on the initiative of Auguste Rodin himself, to provide an insight into his work as a sculptor and the evolution of his practice, the Rodin Museum has been providing behind-the-scenes access to some of the greatest masterpieces of French sculpture for over 100 years: we've all heard or seen reproductions of Le Penseur, Le Baiser, La Porte de l'Enfer and Les Bourgeois de Calais at least once. But how did this sculptor, steeped in the academic tradition, transform the art of sculpture, to the point of calling into question its very characteristics, starting with the very idea of a pedestal, or the completion of a work? What were Rodin's links with the literary, political and artistic milieu of his time? How can we talk about Rodin without mentioning Camille Claudel, his pupil and later lover, a daring artist who burned her wings at the master's side?

These are just some of the questions I'll try to answer during the guided tour, so that together we can unlock some of the secrets of the artist who opened up a new chapter in the history of sculpture, one that would soon be followed by artists such as Constantin Brancusi and Antoine Bourdelle in the 20th century.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about this tour, which includes the Hôtel particulier Biron (home to the Musée Rodin) and the adjoining gardens, and lasts approximately 1h30-45 minutes.
