A guided tour of approximately 1.5 hours to rediscover the avant-gardism of Eugène Boudin (1824-1898), spiritual father of Impressionist painting

From April 9 to August 31, 2025
Paris, 2 Rue Louis Boilly, 75016 Paris, France
About the event
Curated by art historian Laurent Manœuvre, the Musée Marmottan Monet invites visitors to rediscover the work of Eugène Boudin, through a selection of 80 canvases, the majority from the private collection of Yann Guyonvarc'h, a collector with a passion for the artist, and never shown before, with the remainder coming from major institutions (Musée Marmottan Monet itself, Beaux-Arts d'Agen, Art Moderne André Malraux in Le Havre).
The exhibition is divided into 8 chapters, inviting the public to follow the evolution of the painter's career, from his first landscapes in Normandy to his seascapes in the South of France and Venice, via Brittany, Bordeaux and Belgium.
The colors are bold, inspired by sunlight, and the seascapes are as far as the eye can see, with the skies as the main protagonists, prompting Charles Baudelaire to say that no one had painted clouds as well as Boudin. This is why Claude Monet wrote, at the end of his life, that he owed “everything to Boudin”, who had paved the way for plein-air painting and the rendering of atmospheric effects.
