Guided tours of the exhibition "John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) Dazzling Paris" at the Musée d'Orsay

Born in Florence in 1856 and died in London in 1925, John Singer Sargent was a great painter of American origin whose career was characterized by its cosmopolitanism. Trained in Dresden, Florence, and especially Paris, under the tutelage of Carolus-Duran, Adolphe Yvon, and Léon Bonnat, the artist developed, from a young age, a virtuoso talent for depicting portraits and genre scenes, blending realism, Orientalism, and soon Impressionism. Above all, driven by a highly gestural and sensual approach to painting, acquired from Carolus-Duran, John Singer Sargent put his brush at the service of an ambition: to make a splash at the Paris Salon, the most important exhibition of contemporary art of his time.

Moreover, a friend and confidant of some of the greatest celebrities in Parisian high society at the end of the 19th century (Édouard Pailleron, Judith Gautier, Emma Allard-Jouan, Vernon Lee, Auguste Rodin, Samuel Pozzi, Virginie Gautreau, Gabriel Fauré, the Princess de Polignac, etc.), and renowned for his virtuosity during his 12 years in the French capital, John Singer Sargent remains relatively unknown to the French public today, having only been the subject of a single monographic exhibition since his death in 1963.

It is to rectify this oversight and reintegrate John Singer Sargent into the history of art in France at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries that the Musée d'Orsay, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is presenting a retrospective of the artist's Parisian years, which allowed him to develop a commercial and social strategy, in addition to receiving a solid artistic education. which he would continue to develop for the next 40 years of his life, from London, his new center of gravity.
