About the event
It's been over 20 years since Paris hosted a retrospective exhibition devoted to the great French photographer Robert Doisneau (1912-1994). To make up for this absence, the Musée Maillol has teamed up with the photographer's two daughters, Annette Deroucille and Francine Doisneau, to present a magnificent retrospective of his work, based on a meticulous selection of some 350 prints from the 450,000 in his archives, located in Montrouge, in his former studio.
Organized into a series of thematic rooms, each one a journey through the mind of Robert Doisneau (childhood, artists' studios, the Vogue years, bistros and social subjects), the exhibition offers a fresh look at the photographer, far from the simplistic image with which he is sometimes associated.
For there's much more to his work than photographs of schoolchildren and the Baiser de l'Hôtel de Ville. On this guided tour, you'll learn more about the photographer's life, the events that led him to take up the camera, and the viewpoint of a committed, sometimes critical man on his country's situation throughout the 20th century.
You'll also discover rare color prints, a reminder that Robert Doisneau also dabbled in color photography, using both form and substance, far from the romantic image associated with his use of black and white.
